Melanocytes are located in the basal layer of the epidermis, the outermost layer of our skin, and produce a pigment called melanin, which gives our skin its colour. People with darker skin have more melanin-producing cells and produce more melanin than those with lighter skin.

Melanin-rich skin is prone to hyperpigmentation which shows up as discoloured patches on the face and body, often referred to as ‘dark spots.’ Skin that is blessed with more active melanocytes may need more advanced ingredients to help even out skin tone, reduce sebum and give your skin a healthy glow.
